University Honors Country Legend, Debuts 40-Foot Rhinestone Scoreboard
Ceremony Goes Spectacularly Awry as Marching Band Unionizes Mid-Pitch

"It left both spectators and structural engineers reeling."
In an unprecedented turn of events, Oak Ridge University’s endeavor to honor the late, great country music legend Buck Twang outshone the final act of his storied career — literally and figuratively. What began as a modest tribute rapidly evolved into an event of such grandeur, it left both spectators and structural engineers reeling.
The central attraction was the reveal of a 40-foot rhinestone-packed scoreboard, commissioned by the campus Athletic Department at the behest of a historically low-performing football team seeking inspiration from Twang’s unmatched success. "We just wanted something to dazzle people," explained Maggie Larkins, Head of Athletic Aesthetic Oversight. "Turns out, a bedazzled behemoth was the exact bold move we didn't know we needed."
The newly unveiled scoreboard, gleaming even under artificial lighting, bore over six million rhinestones, each carefully chosen to spell out song lyrics from Buck Twang’s greatest hits. However, concerns quickly arose from Alford Jenkins, the stadium’s lead engineer, who unassumingly pointed out that the structure wasn’t designed to support "this much sequin." Jenkins, adjusting his hard hat nervously, noted that only one other institution has attempted such an opulent installation — "And they were a casino."
To add to the extravagance, the Oak Ridge University marching band, renowned for their surprisingly nimble jazz-like interpretative routines, abruptly unionized during their performance. Midway through a key change that allegedly felt "not entirely respectful" to Twang’s original compositions, participants hoisted picket signs reading "Respect the Score" while chanting tunefully against rapid modulations and unwieldy sequins.
Despite the chaos, event organizers remain optimistic about their choice of tribute. "Buck always said he wanted to go out with a bang," remarked Cheryl Snodgrass, self-appointed Director of Rhinestone Affairs and long-time Twang enthusiast. "We guarantee he'd be proud — or at least unable to avert his eyes!"
The event wrapped up with the presentation of a commemorative gold-trimmed sequin cowboy hat, gifted to Oak Ridge’s chancellor, Dr. Grant Devlin, who donned the hat alongside a sequined jacket. His summation of the proceedings was succinctly put: "It's safe to say, there's no topping this, not even with a ten-gallon hat."
Meanwhile, buried amidst the extravagance and discourse was a heartwarming footnote — game attendance hit an all-time high, proving that even on the most absurd of occasions, community spirit shines much like the newly inaugurated scoreboard.
